Chapter 5
Gracie was sitting at her desk when her phone rang. She rarely used it anymore. It was just a phone number she gave places that needed one. Pizza places that delivered. Sometimes the furniture store would need one in order to deliver something. So when she picked it up to answer, she made note of the number and where it was coming from.
âWhat is it you want?â Her politeness didnât extend to people calling her out of the blue either if she was ever polite. The person at the other end seemed shocked that sheâd answer the way she had. âI wonât tolerate you going on and on about why youâre calling. Get to the point or lose my number. Iâm a busy person, and I donât have time to hang around on the phone all day.â
âMy name is Alexander Jamieson. Iâd like to speak to you about an investment.â She ended the call. When the number showed up again, she said the same thing to the person. âI do have an investment Iâd like to talk over with you. Itâsââ
She ended the call the second time. When they didnât call back, Gracie thought they had gotten the point. As she was closing down the computer, the stupid phone rang again. Same number. This time she didnât allow the person to speak.
âI donât have any reason to invest. I donât want you to call here again about it. If you donât have anything else to say to me other than anything that involves me giving you some of my money, then as before, I suggest you lose my number.â He asked her if sheâd give him a chance. âNo.â
This time she turned the sucker off. The man had been calling her number for the last week. Each time she hadnât answered but allowed it to go to voice mail. Heâd not left a message, and she didnât call the number back.
Clyde joined her in the living room an hour later. âA man by the name of Jamison called me today. Said you were too busy to talk to him about an investment. Is that right?â Gracie told him what had transpired. âI was with Ramon when heâd called me. He said heâd called his house as well. If this is all I can expect from a cell phone, Iâd just as soon not have it.â
âI agree.â They put them in the basket by the front door and entered the living room again. âI heard from Bea today. She said Harland is having a hard time, but heâs doing much better with suggesting things rather than demanding them. I think I might have been a little hard on him. I was dealing with shit that I didnât come out on top with.â
âI spoke to him today, as a matter of fact. He said that while itâs hard to do, heâs getting the hang of things. Demanding isnât something he thought he was doing, but rather just doing what heâd been taught by his own parents.
